Emergenetics, The Experience in Our Life

I always want to write about this unique experience to show how Emergenetics (EG) from our point of view. This real life story took place in September 2011 between me and my social preference girl Maria Qibtiyah. This is even more impressive because we see how EG works when we took our 3 days EG associate class in Singapore.

We departed from Jakarta togather, feeling so excited about the new knowledge that we about to get. We were planning to also explore the city inside out. It turned out, we learn how me and Maria differently processing the world and made us realise how we react differently bcoz of it.

OUR PROFILE
Maria is a red preference, i think she is uni-modal red preference. Its shows clearly in her action. She have genuine care for others, always put others first before her, relating and connecting with people is a natural things for her. She is warm and friendly. If i am not mistaken, she is also flexible, 2/3 in her behavioral preferences.

Now my profile, i am a tri-modal green - red - blue. I am a dominant left brain, very logical about most of things. Thorough consideration, i can see multiple point of view, getting along with most kind of people *grin*. My behavioral preferences is 3/3 assertiveness, and 2/3 flexibility and expressiveness. With me, it really depends ;). I can be so quite at one occasion, but i can be so lively in different occasion, it depends.

OUR EG STORIES
As we go thru EG session day by day, and understand its concept. With our different profile, we can see it very clearly how our thinking preferences process the world and how that make us react so uniquely. I just realize this when we have early discussion to sum up yesterday session. Then i have the opportunity to share our interesting stories in front of other EG associate and here is our funny stories...

A. Our bus ride
Every night we planned to eat dinner at different places. And this time, we want to visit one mall, since our hotel is quite far from subway station, we have to use bus first. I always hang on to Singapore map, so does Maria, but here is the difference, on most critical moment, Maria didn't hang on to it *LOL*

Base on the map, we know which station is the nearest, its 3 bus stop based on the map. When we got to the bust stop, i directly look at the bus line info and figure out which bus to take, i prefer this method.

Maria, as her red preference working, she decide to tap someone shoulder and asked, how to get to the nearest subway station.

Then our bus come, i told Maria directly, that it took us 3 bus stop to get there. Yet, being Maria with red preference, she got to her feet and walk towards the bus driver. Talking about weather, and then ask how far is our destination, guess what? 3 bus stop! Hahaha... I was quite amazed, how she insist to do that method, later i realize, that's what is natural for her, i find it amusing how we act differently to achieve one similar clear goal.

B. Reading Signs
The interest to read sign is strong for my preference, but definitely not for Maria. She almost didn't notice that the sign is there (no matter how flashy or huge it is). In Singapore, the city pace is very fast, we can tell from the way people walk, fast and efficient. When we ride an elevator, those who wish to take it slower will stand to the left, to give the chance for those who want to move faster a room to go thru on the right side. We aware of it.

In one of the station, there is a huge sign, posted over a wall (as long as the elevator) emphasizing that. Yet that day, Maria decide to stand and lean (relaxing) on the right side. I tap her shoulder and said, we gotta stand on the left, and point to the huge sign on the wall. She laughed and move to the left side.

For a left-brain-er, we might wonder, how come she didnt notice that huge sign? For her, that sign isnt her interest and her brain process didnt take that into account.

Another funny thing happened in the train. There is always a sign on which door that will open (flashy sign on top of the subway door), again Maria didnt process such information, she stand on the wrong side (it made me laughed). I tap her shoulder (again) and said, Maria... this side (pointing to the other side of the door). She asked me, how do you know? I smile and point to a flashy sign on top of the door. She laughed (we laughed).

C. An old Lady need a Help
On our first night exploring Singapore, we happened to meet an old Lady trying to reach her destination. She seems quite confuse of which train to take to get to her destination. She happened to asked us (who also trying to figure out how to reach our destination), well the first one to respond is off course Maria. She got busy to see the map and trying to explain that she needed to transfer her train. Theoretically, we know that (from the map) but when we look at our surroundings we got confuse too (it was our first night too in Singapore). I then said to the Old Lady that it will be better for her to go to see one of the officer or to information center and they will be able to guide her. Maria seems sooo disappointed of not able to help the Old Lady. We walk away trying to find our own way, less then 10 steps and Maria turn back to the Old Lady and asked her if she needed further help and make sure she talk to the officer on duty. I smile, that,s how strong a uni-modal red preference is... so compassionate towards others.

D. The math behind Emergenetics
Taking associate course, one of the part that we have to know is the math behind it, its how things being calculated and the numbers related to technical side of EG. The group has been divided based on our thinking preferences. Its amusing to see how the left brain see it as logic and simple, but the right brain seems astonished and trying to grasp it to the best extent they can.

Each of us then got an assignment for the math behind EG. In our hotel, Maria said, Heny... can you tell me again on the math. Then she changed her mind, she said, i got to read it on the manual book. I smile and said, yes, that will be an awesome idea.

During her reading, she often checks her understanding to me, whether she got it right, whether her understanding is correct ;) She finally made it on her own. As much as i know her, she made an effort of learning without asking first, which i know it is hard for her. Maria learning process is faster when she got direct conversation, sharing, stories, but she made it! Yay!

Meanwhile for me, it only took a couple of scratches and all done. Its when i left brain people come strong with, data, numbers, analysis.

E. My Flexibility
One of the night after the associate training (we extended our stay in Singapore to see more of the city) after a stroll around the city, we were in the bus on our way back to the hotel. I know exactly where we were and where we're heading. Also know exactly which bus stop to take, off course with a lot of help from the map. When we were 2 bus stops away from our nearest bus stop to hotel, Maria said, "Hen Hen, i think we should stop in the next bus stop".

I told her, no and said it should be 2 more. I know that i was rite, and i also realize that i am better than Maria in knowing this bus stop things. But.... I decide to give her a chance and think of why not giving her a try and let us follow her recommendation this time.

We end up wrong and went thru a longer walking route with a steep climbing path. LOL, off course!!! that should be expected rite? And there she was while walking that climbing road she complained about my flexibility and said why didnt i insist since the first place. If i would have insisted, we would have not walking this longer n climbing road.

We laugh at ourselves again, and think how come that i know the right thing and didnt insist and choose to follow the suggestion from Maria. Thats when we get the idea, my third preference is red and my 2/3 flexibility at work, in results... Tararaaaaa... I surrender to the idea to give Maria a chance and follow it.

I still really remember, one of her words to me while climbing the longer road was about my flexibility, why it has to be that particular time that i choose to be flexible.  Awww mannn... :D

CLOSING
During the last day, we have this contemplation and sharing moments with everyone, and i shared our stories. It apparently catches everyone attention, how we can see EG application on our daily life. We laugh, smile, discuss and share that our kind of story is the story that will help all EG associate to explain easily how we see EG in our daily life.

Up until now, that stories will be me and Maria's treasure to relate EG to new people. Its easy, its actual, its a real experience! We had a great moment with EG Asia, the associates and we share same passion that EG is a very useful tools to understand our uniqueness and others.

An interesting research with Smokers. Must watch and please do share your thoughts about it.

Certified HCMS

Finally, another learning curve, learning journey.
I really recommend this program. Pak Alex Deni is awesome, smart, logic, bring a lot of new ideas and point of view. The point of view every HR should also have.

Knocking our mindset off is definitely something difficult, implementing it, is another journey.
This program, is totally recommended. I would love to discuss further with anyone regarding new trends, development and updates in HR fields. Join our mailing list and start contributing and sharing, keep the learning moving people!

One Size Doesnt Fit All

I have been in HR field for around 10 years, and i feel that there is still a lot of things i need to learn. One thing i learn from my compensation and benefit experience is the philosophy of "One Size Doesnt Fit All".

I used to not believe in it, i used to think that the company can design something to standardize compensation and benefit. However, with the years i have, i should knock that thinking down. Things changes, so does HR stuff, human needs and designing compensation.

1. THE MILLENIUM
In the millenium era, information has flown like never before, easier, faster. Trends move fast and the bar has been set high in many aspects. Including HR.

Maximizing the value of company's expenses on human has becoming the issue. Can HR, in this case compensation design address that? I believe there is no company with unlimited HR budget? (if you happen to know one, please do PING me *grin*)

One way to maximizing company expense to hit the right spot, and the right target to drive right behavior is by "segmentation" or "flexibility". Whether the company wanted to segment its compensation design based on certain criteria (age, gender, function, geography, etc.) or to make the design as flexible as allowed to cater all that. Easy to say, challanging to do :)

2. THE DEMAND
In my journey, the demand has become higher and higher to HR. Started with Dave Ulrich strategic partner concept, HR has been plotted to speak in the same language with the business.

Human Capital concept where addressing human and their competency as part of company's asset, meaning there is a value on every single individual starts to drive HR towards advance direction.

Company not only expecting loyalty, they expect engagement. In my understanding, engage employee is those whose both head and heart work for the company. Its another dream to catch.

Employee demand to HR, not only tp provide administrative function, but also function to enable professional and personal growth, career, and talent management.

Its a lot to chew... But lets bite from the easiest spot, i believe it is not impossible.

3. FLEXIBLE BENEFIT
One alternative to address those area and nowadays has become more and more popular is flexible benefit. I do believe its a good solution to address budget limitation and individualizing employee needs. Empowiring employee at the same time to think and decide their own compensation package and helping HR to design it. Its a preety sweet solution.

Tho as always, easier said than done. But this is one of the solution to address todays uniqueness of the compensation world.

Being current, updated, making necessary changes fast enough in the right place is crucial to stay competitive and to be able to address business needs. HR isnt function properly until it could provide direct impact to business i think. And that alone needs a big shift from paradigm, mindset, design, culture from HR, business and employee. Stay current... Speak for the business :)

Living with Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome

In 2012, i have been diagnose with "Mitral Valve Prolapse" i will call it MVP in this page. I will share you my stories...

FIRST TIME
First time i notice something wrong in my heart (literally heart *grin*) i guess when i was at high school. There was a time when my heart flutter but happen very soft and rarely happened. I thot that it was nothing, the condition didnt change much over the years. I started feel it more of flutter heart around my late 20-ies. I was once check it to a doctor and she said something is not really normal with the electrocardiogram. I didnt really think much of it at that time. Then i move to a job with a very high demand and stress, i feel it often, more often, it increases the frequency and the intensity.

WHAT EXACTLY DO I FEEL
It might be difficult for you to understand what does it feels but i will try to describe it the best i can. Sometimes i feel my heart beat irregularly, most of the time, it feels scary. Imagine you are sitting nicely working, reading a book or just doing nothing, and suddenly your heart beat twice in one count "bump bump" and you have to catch your breath because then you suddenly need more oxygen. That was the most scary part to me.

That flutter, happen often when i feel stressed or too excited (it doesnt really matter whether it is good or bad situation :)). Another alarming sign is you felt pain in your left chest, it was brief, not really bothering but you just can not point which part that is hurt. Then it develop, sometimes i will feel its hard to breath, some dizzy head and sometimes, feeling that i want to vomit.

But remember.... it doesnt happen all the time. Most of the time, i was okay... nothing wrong with my physical condition, so dont you think that i look like a severely sick person. In fact i am pretty healthy, never really go to hospital for serious illness.

EYE OPENER
I never seriously visit doctor and check my condition. But then, there was a time, that really open my eyes and i need to seriously find out what was wrong. That time was a time when i had a medical check up and took a treadmill test. During the test everything okay, the ECG, even the treadmill. But then... when all the heart monitor still intact in my chest, but the recording has been turned off, and both the nurse and the doctor writing their report, there comes the beat...

One irregular beat that directly shown in the heart monitor, it was a shocking moment for me, a moment where the irregularity i had been feeling is displayed with a crystal clear monitor in front of my very eyes. it was ugly, and scary... the first thing i say was "what the hell was that...". If you can imagine a "supposed to" just a regular heart beat in an ECG chart, and then it spike like crazy on all lines in one beat.

Then after that, i decide to seriously find out what is that.

DR. JOKO MARYONO
He is the guy who i decide to meet in RSPI. The reason is very simple, i often listen to his radio show regarding heart condition, a flamboyant cardiologist who like to sing and doesnt sounds uptight.

My first meeting was surprising, he was older than i thot he was :)) (its a complimentary dok), he is very friendly, helpful, talkative, relax and feels like we can talk about anything with him, beside i believe he is the type of man who adore women and really cherish women for who we are.

With an examination using Echocardiogram (i hope i spell it rite) confirm that i have MVP. FINALLY.... :) i know what is wrong with me. Good thing is... there is nothing to worry about with this disorder. I can still live normal and doing all normal stuff without any special treatment.

DANCING WITH THE WOLF
After knowing it and read a lot about it, i think i am quite prepared for my situation. I am more calm when the flutter or the pain come, tho i have to admit it still a little bit scary (just a little). Lets just call it, to dance with the wolf, cool isnt it.

Most people with mitral valve prolapse lead normal, productive and symptom-free lives. Doctors generally won't recommend restrictions on your lifestyle or any limitations on your personal exercise or dietary program.

A quote from Mayo Clinic really help me to face the situation and the "attack" when it comes. The picture is also taken from Mayo Clinic for reference. Mayo is my favorite health site of all time.

You can find reliable source on what is MVP on my favorite health site as follow:

This blog is purely my personal point of view of things, my surroundings, my interest, my learning curve and my feelings. Even if i will share some of my professional experiences, that does not and shall never be claimed as the opinion of my employer or my previous employer. That will be purely my personal opinion.

Hopefully i will be able to share to the world and try to make me and touch you with the good things in life, things we should be grateful and adding friends in my circle. Feel free to write me a constructive feedback and we can then learn from each other.
